Design a kitchen fit for 2020

by Dec 5, 2019

Kitchen trends continue to reflect lifestyles that seek the upbeat social activities and conveniences demanded by today’s families. As the center of the home, must-haves in the kitchen of 2020 include an eye toward bright and natural colors, a large island and conveniences provided by today’s technological advances that make preparation, entertaining and clean-up easier.

Design and color

Natural finishes and bright colors are key as today’s families make kitchen plans. Look for more wood finishes on walls and countertops, including butcher blocks throughout. Other popular choices are concrete counters and marble, especially strongly veined pieces that bring out texture.

For cabinets and appliances, bright colors are the trend, with green being the color of 2020. Look for unique pairings of colors, such as chartreuse cabinets, dark appliances and even black walls, with mixed metals for faucets and cabinet hardware.

Functionality

Today’s kitchen will have an island that provides a large area for preparation and entertaining. Look for multilevel islands and multiple islands in kitchens large enough to accommodate the additional convenience. Families also continue to build in pet feeding stations, recycling stations and laundry cabinets that make these tasks quick and convenient.

Kitchen plans in 2020 will take advantage of many technological advances that fully support today’s fast-paced lifestyle. Look for smart kitchens in which a Google Home or Amazon Echo does everything from answering a meal prep question to ordering groceries, or Alexa can turn on your timer or microwave.

Appliances also offer the latest in technology, including ovens that also air fry, eliminating the need for a countertop unit, and refrigerators equipped with produce drawers that filter out the ethylene gas that causes produce to rot. Look also for small in-sink dishwashers designed to wash 10 or fewer items for you.
